The Newscaster is the monthly news letter for the Indianhead Fly Fishers. The current President's message will be here and the Newscaster archives will follow.
It’s Wednesday (I think)
Well—-I had to redo this: first draft, composed under the effects of a preoperative drug with psychotropic side effects, was somewhat incoherent, —-I couldn’t walk straight either.
So the retrospective news is that a crew was set to brave the weather/traffic conditions into Midvale today; to execute an introductory fishing class for a group of middle school students. The origin of the project is a senior class Midvale High School student, who conceived it as a method of meeting his community project assignment. I am eager to hear how that worked; there were a lot of experienced folk involved, and I am hopeful that the recruitment of some new members will result.
Tomorrow morning, our weekly breakfast gathering at 95 Burger house resumes, after the Thanksgiving pause. Be there at 8:00 am.
The Fly Tying Workshop, co-sponsored by IFF and the Bee Tree Folk School, continues Thurday evening (the 4th at 6:30 pm). If I am not still completely disoriented, the Gurgler is the subject fly, and Mike S. is the lead instructor.
This project is under the leadership of our fearless vice president, and has had faithful and enthusiastic attendance from the registered students. This will be the third of five scheduled sessions. Please recognize that many of our members have sacrificed a bunch of time and materials to this effort, and if you find yourself at the Ace Hardware at Ridley’s, look up James, the manager, and thank him for the materials they donated.
Our annual Christmas celebration is scheduled for Tuesday , the 10th. Join us for the food (pizza, sodas and salad bar provided by the club—-gotta buy your own alcohol) -last I heard, the time was 6:00 pm, at Idaho Pizza on Commercial St. in Weiser. If you want to participate in the anonymous gift exchange, bring a wrapped gift, and remember there will be ladies and probably kids attending. If you want to know the “rules”, I am not the one to ask.
Idaho Pizza/Elks Lodge will have their can goods drive collection box setup. Donations qualify the club for a discount on the food.
Since I have not recent photos that don’t include excessive frigid whiteness, I just leave you with one from long ago, in a far-off, and warmer, place. (That would be Upper Wrights Lake, in the Marble Mtn. Wilderness Area.)
If you’re more cold tolerant than I, I hope you can go catch a fish: have fun, and Merry Christmas.
Stay safe, folks—Let’s go fishing.
Bruce Parsons
White Elephant Gift Exchange
1. Each player brings one wrapped gift to contribute to a common pool
2. Players draw numbers to determine what order they will go in
3. The first player selects a gift from the pool, opens it, and shows it to the group.
4. The following players can choose to either pick an unwrapped gift from the pool or steal a previous player’s gift. Anyone who gets their gift stolen in this way can do the same either choose a new gift or steal from someone else.
5. To keep things moving along, there are a couple of limits on gift swapping/stealing:
a) A present can only be stolen once per turn, which means players who have a gift stolen from them have to wait to get it back.
b) After three swaps, the turn automatically comes to an end
6. The Dick Garret Rule : After all players have had a turn, if the first player has not had their gift stolen and chance to swap the first gift, they may choose to steal/swap for any other opened gift. Anyone whose gift is stolen in this last round may steal from someone else.
